Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide and of diarrheal deaths in developing countries. WHO has recommended inclusion of rotavirus vaccine in the National Immunization Schedules where under 5 mortality due to diarrheal diseases is ≥ 10%.
Rotavirus accounts for 40% of hospitalizations due to diarrhea in children. Approx. 50% of Rotavirus-associated deaths occur in the first year of life and about 75% occur in the first two years of life. Rotavirus is a genus of double-stranded RNA viruses in the family Reoviridae.
Rotavac vaccine was licensed for use in India in 2014 and is manufactured by Bharat Biotech international limited. It is a live attenuated, monovalent vaccine containing a G9P[11] human strain isolated from an Indian child.

Rotavirus vaccine packaging in India
- Govt. of India is supplying Rotavac® vaccine manufactured by Bharat Biotech to be used under Universal Immunization Programme.
- Each vaccine vial contains 10 doses in liquid form
- The carton pack contains 30 vials of 10 dose vial i.e. 300 doses.
- Does not require reconstitution.
- Color of the vaccine is generally pink: it may sometimes be orange or yellow. The color of vaccine does not impact its quality.
- All RVV (Rotavirus vaccine) vials are supplied with a VVM on cap.
Doses and route of rotavirus vaccine administration
- The dose of Rotavirus vaccine currently being supplied under UIP is 5 drops given orally.
- Three doses of rotavirus vaccine will be administered to all infants at 6, 10 and 14 weeks along with other vaccines in routine immunization schedule.
- No booster dose of Rotavirus vaccine is recommended.
- RVV has to be used within 4 hours of opening. There is no open vial policy for Rotavirus Vaccine.
