Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram

Government of India launched the Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) on 1st June 2011, a new national initiative, to make available better health facilities for women (Janani) and child (Shishu). All the states and Union Territories of the India have initiated implementation of this Karyakram.

Aims of the JSSK

To eliminate out of pocket expenses incurred by the pregnant women and sick newborns while accessing health care services at Government health facilities.

Free facilities provide under JSSK for women and child

A. For women

  1. All pregnant women delivering in public health institutions to have absolutely free and no expense delivery, including caesarean section.
  2. Free investigation
  3. Free drugs and other consumable articles.
  4. Free blood supply whenever required.
  5. Free diet during stay in hospital upto 3days during normal delivery and upto 7 days caesarean section.
  6. Free transportation facility: (a) From home to health institution. (b) Drop back from health institution. (c) Between health care institutions in case of referral.

B. For sick newborn

All above free health services of women is also provided to all sick newborn up to the age of 30 days.

Extension of free facilities under JSSK

Now free facilities under JSSK are provided to the followings also:
  1. Women having complications during antenatal period.
  2. Women having complications during postnatal period.
  3. Sick children up to the age of one year.
The scheme is estimated to benefit more than 12 million pregnant women who access government health facilities for their delivery. Moreover, it will motivate those who still choose to deliver at their homes to opt for institutional deliveries.
